O - Numero 0 - Released on Antenna Records

Pretention must be a terrible curse. With an insistence that this recorded album is not music and that only the listeners can make it music, O seem to be quickly shifting the blame of their album onto other people. Perhaps their statements are a rough French translation of “It wasn’t me sir, a big boy did it and ran away.”

Like all good pretentious records, there is a fair mix of the sublime and the ridiculous on here. When the tracks sway along and the acoustic guitar picks out a haunting melody and the backing instruments chime and ring, then there is a lot to marvel and enthuse about. The scratchy intro to “Pi desert” hints of better things and what could be achieved with more focus.
Sadly, for every highlight there is an equal out of tune hammering or some rhythm-less clattering going on. There is no flow to this album and it can be difficult for the listener to welcome it in one sitting.
