Pilots of the Sixth - Arbury Demonstrations (single)
Pilots of the Sixth sound very much of today and their debut release 'Arbury Demonstrations”
With three tracks clocking in at less than eight minutes, theres not a lot to gauge a first impression on but there isn’t a really second wasted on the release. Each track busies itself along in its own way but there is a thread of The Libertines, The Fratellis and a modern blues rewrite coursing through the songs, such is the upbeat almost frenetic nature.
Opener 'No One Cares' slopes its way through with a jaunty feel and a squeaky vocal delivery, drawing The Kooks comparison in early, although nowhere near as annoying thankfully.
'Picadilly' is more akin to early 60s rocker in its light tone and there is a sloppy yet comfortable feel to the lyrics and melodies with closer 'Keep on Talking' being more up for it with an almost rockabilly nature spitting out a more venomous lyrical approach.
The variety shown in the songs indicates strength in depth and its no great surprise to see that each song came from a different songwriter within the band.
Having three separate songwriters can be great for creativity and competition but with egos and pride at stake, it remains to be seen how long Pilots if the Sixth will be sticking around. On this initial and brief showing, it can only be hoped they’ll hang around for a good while.
10/13
A short sharp blast of rock and roll good times.
A welcome and varied release from Pilots Of The Sixth sees them on course for better things ahead.
