The Beautiful New Born Children - Hey People (album) - Domino Records

They may call themselves The Beautiful New Born Children but this is a record with one foot in the past and the other already heading out the exit door, such is the speed at which the album is over and done with.

It’s a really compact record that bashes away in a Kings Of Leon style, all fast guitars and muffled vocals that are buried low in the mix. Not so low that the listener can't make out a blatant Nirvana rip on opening track 'Do The Do' but there is very little that stands out on the first few listens. With 9 tracks clocking in at less than 25 minutes, there is plenty of opportunity to re-listen to this album but there isn’t much differentiation between tracks. If you like fast, short songs with more swing than your local playground then this album will do it for you, just don’t hope for a change in pace.

Mid album songs like 'Hey Heartbreaker' and 'OK, Allright, Fine' are akin to The Hives at their dirtiest and the final track has a Stooges influence, but for all the albums similar and continuous feel, there is a disjointed air to it; almost as if it has been thrown together rather than being created over time.

With a UK tour scheduled around the album release, there is a strong chance the band will find favour - the songs indicate that a wild night might be in store for any gig-goer but on record, its all a bit too one-dimensional and done before for much of an impact to be made

6/10
