The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers - (album) - Released by XL Records.

Forget all about your red, blacks and whites, Jacks back and this time the hue is more akin to the psychedelic fashioning of Love, The Beatles or Led Zeppelin.

Opener and debut single, “Steady As She Goes” is a straightforward rocker, immediately showcasing the vocal weaving of White and Brendan Benson and the full band backing supplied by members of The Greenhornes. As an introduction, it serves its purpose but there are better treats to be found later on.

For all the posturing that this is a full time concern for all members, there is a relaxed nature and simplicity that comes from the ad-hoc nature of the band. From the twisted stomp and Eastern influenced title track to the reflective, laidback “Together” or “Call It A Day”, the song writing talent is in no doubt and the band is consistent and strong throughout.

Whilst possibly failing to live up to the expectations of the acts recent UK tour, its an immensely likeable album, placing the focus onto Jack Whites searing and piercing vocals and away from his sonic guitar workouts. A worthy addition to White’s catalogue.

An immensely fun and enjoyable record that captures the sound of friends taking a break from their day jobs.
