Assembly Now - It's Magnetic (single)
Assembly Now is a name that is sure to lead to much confusion and endless hilarity if the band makes the breakthrough. Its hard to imagine what image, if any, the name conjures up and it isn't the best. Thankfully, the bands spunky debut single does the talking for the group.
Rifling straight down to business with a zippy guitar riff, Assembly Now don't waste any time, sounding of London now but of classic 80's indie-pop. Perhaps the vocal delivery has that casual drawl in the verses which places it in a bye-gone era but these fade when compared the falsetto pangs of the chorus. Its an extremely busy track that continually offers something up to the listener and never takes its foot off the gas. As an introduction, its probably the best way to do it, and will sneak away to be remembered later on.
B-side 'Its On' features an extremely healthy bass intro that continues to underpin the song, allowing the very 1980's indie lead vocals to yelp and prowl over the top of it all. As an additional track, its of quite a good standard, slow paced but it carries a tune quite well. And that nagging bassline...good stuff.
For a quick one-two, Assembly Now have succeeded in firing off a couple of buzzing indie pop tracks that may not immediately convince you of their quality but will certainly have you coming back to check out future releases.
