Candy Thief - Like / Unlike(album)

Another swoon some and lovely record from Fence Records, Candythief have created a melodic tour-de-force with “Like/Unlike.” In under half an hour, the mood goes from light-folk, to almost 70s dark rock on “Serpentine.” In all the changing styles, the female vocals remain constant, a cool and unhurried take on life, taking everything in their stride.

The chorus of “Satellite” sounds a lot like Madness’ “Our House”, which is something you would never foresee coming during the verse but again, the versatility of this record shines through on moments like this. With the short length of the release, this sort of experimentation manages to hold itself together and works rather well. With the blues stomp of “Ersatz” taking the album down to a strong conclusion, theres a little bit of something for everyone here.

The title may be ambivalent but Candythief will find themselves liked more than they are not.
