The name may not be familiar but M Ward has appeared with My Morning Jacket and twiddled the knobs for Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley fame. Unsurprisingly, his latest album is a sublime piece of modern country rock that more than stands up to comparison with his contemporaries.
Wards vocals have that croaky, lived-in feeling that envelopes the listener, and it meshes well with lively accompaniment. On tracks like “Right In The Head” the album never wallows, and there is an upbeat spring in its step throughout. It even gets quite raucous on “Magic Trick” and on the whole, its quite an uplifting album to lose yourself in.
With a Daniel Johnston cover, “To Go Home” slotting in nicely with the self-penned tracks, this album is sure to be a favourite with those who frequent the world of Wilco or modern Americana .
